The Making of Jennifer Gaddis.
THE ODDS WERE AGAINST ME -At Least According to Statistics.
In 2003, at the age of 17, in my senior year of high school I got pregnant. My mother didn’t find out until I was almost 4 months. When she found out she was so hurt, so I tried to get an abortion. My father’s advice to me was that he was not going to support my decision to have an abortion. He then proceeded to say: “You can still be successful, and go to college, the road may be harder, and it might take you longer, but it is up to you to achieve your goals for you and your child.”
I was confused and frightened. One morning I went to an abortion clinic. The cost was $1000 plus it was a risk to my own life because I was so far along in the pregnancy.
I remember being so scared as I was lying on the bed the nurse was giving me and ultrasound and I was not supposed to view the screen, but I was able to see that I had a fully developed child growing inside of me and I had been feeling movements for a few weeks. As I laid there I thought how could I not take responsibility and I heard my father’s advice.
I got up from the table and told the women I was not going through with the procedure. I went to the waiting area and told my mother and step dad I was not going to do it, I was going to take responsibility. My mother’s next words were, “let’s go shopping.”
With the odds against me being a young mother, I still continued to turn my class work in and complete the12th grade. There were several young mothers who dropped out, but I made it! I remember graduation day, my son had on an orange outfit in the stands with my mother. This was the best day of my life! I did it!
After graduation I got my first “real-job” without a college degree, at a Blood Manufacturing Company. I went from making $7 an hour and working 7 different jobs in that one year to making $14 an hour at that one job with full benefits at the age of 19 years old. Man I felt like I was on top of the world!
Hitting an Emotional Bottom-Comfortable Can Be Uncomfortable
Fast forward, I have almost 10 years of experience in the medical field still without a college degree. My son is 10 years old, I am now married with another child. I was working a full-time administrative position. My husband and I were both in JOBS that ruled our time, money and happiness. A few times we lived in a one bedroom apartment just to save money and let the kids sleep in the room and we shared a mattress on the floor in the living room.
I remember once things got so tight with money, I woke up to go to work and I realized I didn’t have any gas money. I remember that day. My husband went searching around the house and the car for money and the only thing we could come up with was $5 worth of nickels. It was a very painful day mentally, to have to stand in the gas line and pay for gas with all nickels in a middle-high class neighborhood.
I remember thinking, ” what are we doing wrong, I went to college, I have the good job, but I’m not happy, I can’t take a real vacation, I hated my job.”
What Do I Have to Lose?
In 2013 we decided to take a family vacation to Chicago and visit my children’s Great-Grandmother. It was a wonderful vacation. On the day we were supposed to leave my husband and I decided to drive 30 minutes north to see the area and walk on the beach. Man, was it beautiful. As we stood on the lake we both meditated and thought to ourselves that we wanted something different. I remember saying to myself, what do I have to loose, I am so unhappy at my current job and facing racial tension behind my back in the office. I was tired of giving my time to a place where I was not appreciated. So we continued looking for apartments and condos available in the area and found one right across from the beach. The apartment was a winner because we could view the beach from the windows and we could walk across the street. It was a perfect location! We took an application and got on the road back to Georgia.
My Resignation From an Unhappy Life
When we returned back to Georgia, we were informed that the apartment could be ours with a deposit.
My husband and I started applying for new jobs in Chicago. We sent the deposit for the place off the beach and researched the area schools for the kids. It was official. We were about to do something different!
Within a few days my husband had a job interview set up and I had 3 lined up for the following week and 4 more the next week in Chicago. Miracles happen when you are determined and in the right place at the right time.
We decided to go for the interviews and if we got new jobs we were going to relocate to Chicago.
So, I proceeded to put in my resignation notice, I didn’t have a job yet, but we already had a place to stay and I knew it was time for a change in our lives. I gave a month resignation notice with the belief that we would get employment and move as soon as possible.
We drove back to Chicago for our interviews. My husband and I were hired for positions to start on July 1.
Omg! We Did It.
When I returned to GA, I went to work and retracted my old resignation date for a sooner date. My director didn’t like it so she spitefully terminated me early stating it was because I didn’t show up for work the previous day because I was in Chicago.
So she let me work the whole day and terminated me. This was the first time I had ever been terminated from a job before. And unlike other peoples experiences, it was the BEST feeling of my life.
She actually did me a favor because I was finally FREE, I was only still working to be respectful and give notice. We already had the place off the beach and jobs. It was time to leave. I signed the termination notice with a smile, because she thought she was hurting me, but I had everything already taken care of, she couldn’t break my path because I had everything prepared.
I’m Free! At least I thought!
The next day I awakened with a clear mind and by the end of the week, we were all packed with all of our personal belongings in a Uhaul. My husband drove the Uhaul for ten hours and my kids and I followed in our car. We were off to a new life at least I thought!
After moving to Chicago, We realized that all we did was move to another state with the same repetitive lifestyle. We still were working for people, will still didn’t control our time, we were living on an even thinner budget of living check to check. Still watching other people live life while we were clocking in to a job, unable to increase our income and unable to get off of work to see our children in there school programs or spend time with each other or pay for a vacation.
“We had these big business Ideas and dreams but no clients and customers, no money and no time or freedom.”
One night after realizing we got paid and we barely had enough for gas money for the next two weeks and groceries that was the very moment, I made a commitment to immerse myself in absolutely everything that had to do with growing my business.
But during this process I realized that it was more to just putting a website up for your business, it was about creating relationships with your customers and clients that made you money, it was about your brand awareness, getting customers to come back, marketing and it was about creating a solid platform for long term success and freedom in your business, so you could still enjoy life and make money.
During this process I discovered how to build a business that attracted ideal paying customers, made you money and gave you freedom.
